If visual schedules map out the whole day, a first-then board zooms all the way in to the next two steps — and for many kids, that simplicity is exactly what makes hard moments easier. It's one of the most useful, low-effort tools a family can keep on hand.
What is a first-then board?
A first-then board is a simple visual with two spots: “first” (the task you need them to do) and “then” (a motivating activity that follows). For example: first shoes, then park. It turns an abstract expectation into something concrete a child can see.
Why it works
It sets a clear expectation and builds in motivation at the same time, which cuts down on power struggles — the board, not you, lays out the deal. It's especially helpful for children who struggle with transitions or with holding multi-step directions in mind.
How to use one well
- Keep it to two steps — first and then, nothing more.
- Make the “then” genuinely motivating to your child.
- Follow through immediately once the “first” is done.
- Use real photos or simple icons and keep your language short.
- Stay matter-of-fact and consistent.
